Health insurance: mandatory in Germany

Your health comes first: This is why health insurance is needed for everyone working in Munich, Germany. This page informs you about the most important insurances. To get started, here is an overview of the types of health insurance and their services.

Health insurance in Germany: private or statutory

 Statutory Health Insurance (public):

  • The most common system: Government-run, covers essential medical needs for employees.
  • Employer role: If you’re moving for work, your employer will confirm your enrollment.
  • Choosing a provider: You can select a public health insurance provider (Krankenkasse) that suits your needs. Providers may offer additional benefits and varying doctor networks. You can find a list of all the statutory health insurance providers here (page in German – please select the state of Bayern).

Private Health Insurance:

  • Higher flexibility: Offers more options and higher coverage limits but costs more
  • Eligibility: Typically for self-employed individuals or high-income earners

Switching systems:

Choose carefully, as switching between public and private insurance later on can be difficult.

Temporary coverage:

Since permanent health insurance takes time to arrange, consider international health insurance for your arrival. This ensures you are covered until you finalize your long-term plan.

Our Tip

Proof of health insurance is often required for visa applications. Securing temporary coverage ensures you are prepared from the moment you arrive.

The City of Munich offers counseling and information on statutory health, long-term care, and accident insurance in Munich. Do you have any questions about statutory health, accident and long-term care insurance, or severe disability? Very useful: Personal public liability insurance (“Haftpflichtversicherung“)

In Germany, the law holds you responsible for any unintentional damage you cause, whether it is personal injury, property damage (such as a broken window), or even a car accident.

Although not mandatory, we highly recommend personal liability insurance. Here’s why:

  • Coverage: This insurance acts as a safety net, covering the cost of damages you or your family accidentally cause to others.
  • Financial protection: Without insurance, you could face significant financial burdens to pay for damages.
  • Family included: Many policies also cover accidental damage caused by your children or other family members living with you.

You can find information about personal liability insurance here.
