Health is important: Munich cares for you.

You are in very capable medical hands: Munich has over 15,000 medical professionals and a highly effective healthcare network. These specialists work in hospitals, medical practices, public health institutions, and private consultations – ensuring patients get the best care.

Munich provides lots of different healthcare options. The city has many hospitals, some with a long history, some privately owned, and some run by the government.
Among them, the LMU Klinikum with its 2,200 beds stands out as a leading center for high-performance medicine, innovation, and cutting-edge medical technology.

Rest assured: Munich’s healthcare system offers a wealth of choices to ensure your well-being.

In Germany, health insurance is mandatory. If you are new to Munich, make sure to review the health insurance requirements. Find more information here.

Are you feeling unwell? Your first point of contact for German healthcare is usually a General Practitioner (GP), known as an ”Allgemeinarzt“ or ”Hausarzt“. These doctors can assess your condition, provide treatment, or refer you to a specialist if needed.

Hospitals are for emergencies or severe illnesses requiring advanced treatment. For minor injuries or non-emergent conditions, a GP’s office is the preferred route.

The good news? Most medical treatments are covered by your health insurance provider. Make sure you understand your plan’s coverage and any potential out-of-pocket costs.
