Germany has two main types of universities: Regular universities (“Universitäten”), which focus on theory and research, and Universities of Applied Sciences (“Fachhochschulen”/FHs or “Hochschulen für Angewandte Wissenschaften”/HAWs), which focus on practical skills and preparing you for a career. Additionally, there are Colleges of art, film, and music (“Kunst-, Film-, und Musikhochschulen”).
